Into the Ice: Chasing Magic at 80° North on a Ponant Arctic Expedition
There are trips you take, and then there are voyages that shift your entire sense of place and wonder. Sailing through the Arctic fjords and glaciers of Spitsbergen aboard a stunning Ponant expedition ship was the latter — a soul-stirring, awe-drenched experience I’ll never forget.
From the moment we stepped aboard our beautiful vessel, we knew this wasn’t your average cruise. Sleek and stylish with a touch of French flair, the ship itself felt like a sanctuary at sea — warm woods, cozy lounges, French cuisine that somehow defied the remote latitude, and a crew whose warmth rivaled the midnight sun. There’s something undeniably special about French hospitality when paired with the raw majesty of the Arctic.
But this wasn’t about pool decks or port shopping. This was an expedition. The kind of trip that trades crowded itineraries for Zodiac-forward adventure and deep immersion in wild, untouched corners of the earth. Each day brought us somewhere remote and otherworldly — and no two landings were ever the same. One morning might find us gliding through icy bays alongside puffins and guillemots; the next, walking on tundra paths dotted with Arctic fox tracks, under the curious gaze of a reindeer.
The naturalists on board were nothing short of extraordinary. Equal parts experts and entertainers, they brought the landscape to life with infectious passion. Their excitement was real — when we spotted our first polar bear, you could feel the reverence. Seeing such a powerful creature, perfectly camouflaged against the ice, instantly changes you. It’s one thing to read about Arctic wildlife — quite another to watch a bear roam the sea ice at 80° North and realize that some of them never touch land, living their entire lives on this surreal floating shelf.
And oh, the magic of 24-hour sunlight. Time became irrelevant — dinners at 10 p.m. felt perfectly natural when golden light still sparkled on the water. There’s something freeing about not needing to check your watch, and instead letting nature dictate your rhythm.
Reaching 80° North — just shy of the North Pole — was a surreal, almost sacred experience. The icy expanse felt like the edge of the world. To know we were in a place few people ever go, where life clings to the ice and thrives despite the odds, was deeply humbling.
Expedition cruising is a different kind of travel — it’s intimate, immersive, and wild. It reconnects you to the earth in a way no resort or city ever could. And in this stark, spectacular landscape, I found not just unforgettable beauty, but a deeper appreciation for the fragile magic of our planet.
If you ever get the chance to sail with Ponant into the Arctic — take it. Trust me. You’ll come home forever changed.

.
- Ice Shelf at 80° North: A milestone moment — the furthest north we could go, surrounded by frozen silence and surreal beauty.
Each day included Zodiac landings or cruises, wildlife sightings, expert lectures, and gourmet meals aboard.

We returned to Longyearbyen, heads full of wonder, hearts full of gratitude — and minds forever changed by the Arctic’s wild magic.
My Luxury Experience on Ponant’s Le’Boreal Expedition ship
Le Boréal is purpose-built for immersive expedition voyages—from Antarctica and Arctic regions to the Mediterranean and South Pacific. Its ice-class hull and Zodiac fleet support engaging Zodiac landings, wildlife viewing, and extended coastal stops with long port stays and late departures. The ship’s interiors echo modern French elegance, featuring muted taupe, cream, and white tones, Swarovski-lit atriums, Philip Plisson black-and-white photography, and minimalist décor that evokes a boutique hotel at sea.
Comfort and refined amenities are hallmarks of life on board. Almost all accommodations come with private balconies, Nespresso machines, Bose Bluetooth speakers, Dyptique Paris bath amenities, and plush spaces that blur lines between luxurious hotel and superyacht . Dining is elevated with two onboard restaurants: the upscale La Licorne for French gastronomic creations and the relaxed La Boussole Grill for casual lunches and themed evenings. We were further pampered at the spa and wellness center, in partnership with Sothys Paris, featuring massage cabins, hammam, salon, sauna, and panoramic fitness facilities, plus a heated outdoor pool, multiple lounges, a theatre for lectures and shows, and a bridge to calm relaxation. A truly remarkable way to explore the Arctic, this journey offers a rare blend of immersive adventure and refined comfort.
